Autism is a severe and complex disability. Children with autism
require intervention and training that are structured, systematic
and meet their specific needs. In recent years the incidence of
autism spectrum disorders (ASD) has gone up significantly. Though
prevalence of ASD in India is yet to be determined, it may be
estimated to be as high as 1 or 2 in 300 children. In a country
of over a billion people this is a very high prevalence rate.
Despite a huge population
of individuals who might be affected by ASD, there is a lack of
adequate societal and governmental support for creating suitable
provisions for them.
SOPAN is a registered
Society and a Public Trust started in 2002 by parents of children
who have autistic disorders. The SOPAN members realize the role
of stakeholders in development of facilities for diagnosis, intervention,
training and employment of children and young adults with ASD.
As a parent association,
SOPAN
- Is a forum where parents, guardians, caretakers and professionals
can discuss issues
concerning autism and pervasive developmental disorders (PDD).
- Creates awareness about ASD in the community.
- Supports establishment of facilities for education training
and respite care and long
term care of persons with autism.
- Encourages self-help groups of parents and caregivers for
providing employment and
recreational opportunities to persons with ASD.
- Cooperates and works in coordination with any society, association
and organization
that has similar aims.
- Promotes citizen and self-advocacy for autism, and liaises
with concerned government
agencies at national, state and local levels.
